Year 10 students raise money for disadvantaged children

On Wednesday, 1st December Westonbirt School hosted a musical fundraising concert in aid of the Old Karu Orphanage in Abuja, Nigeria.

Friends and family of Westonbirt students enjoyed an evening of performances to raise well-needed funds for the Orphanage. Pupils from all year groups were invited to perform at the concert, resulting in a wonderful evening filled with an array of talent.

The event was organised by five of Westonbirt’s Year 10 students: Georgie Fenn, Alice Wordsworth, Bryony Curry, Louise Nicholls and Katie O’Neill. The Year 10 students worked extremely hard to ensure the event ran smoothly and later celebrated when the funds raised exceeded £400. One of the organisers, Georgie Fenn, has experienced conditions in the Old Karu Orphanage for herself. She explained the reasons behind the fundraising concert, ‘When not in school I spend time in Abuja, Nigeria. I visit the Karu Orphanage often and each time I leave, I wish there was more that I could do to help. When I returned to school I spoke with Mrs. Henderson and asked if I could hold some fundraising events, I was delighted when she thought it was a lovely idea. Since then my friends and I have worked hard to raise money. I am excited to see how the money will be spent at the orphanage and to be able to help them in a small way through our efforts.

The girls also spent time raising money for the orphanage during the Friends of Westonbirt Christmas Party on Friday, 3rd December.
