Model United Nations' Debate at Westonbirt School

On Thursday, November 25th 2010, Westonbirt’s Year 10 students invited two local schools to take part in the annual Model United Nations’ Debate.

Sir William Romney School, Tetbury, and Malmesbury School spent the day here at Westonbirt acting as ambassadors, each representing a different nation. The Year 10 students engaged in discussion and covered important issues such as human rights, the economy, the environment and the security of their nation, including the sensitive topics of nuclear disarmament, the role of the female in today’s society, poverty, and renewable energy.

The day was hugely enjoyable and a rewarding experience for all. Students were encouraged to create and merge resolutions with other nations in order to solve problems. The debate allowed students to research, present, ask questions and vote, as their nation would see fit.

Nicky Gill, Head of Geography at Westonbirt School enthused how the debate allowed students to take part and develop an understanding of the bigger picture in world politics. Mrs. Gill said ‘students are all faced with a challenging environment during the debate, not only does it allow them to learn and develop key skills, it is also a large confidence boost for all pupils involved’.

Westonbirt, Sir William Romney and Malmesbury Schools have entertained a close relationship for over twenty years. We are already looking forward to next year’s debate here at Westonbirt School!

Below is a picture of the students taking part in the General Assembly, where each ambassador was required to present a one minute speech representing their nation.
