Duke of Edinburgh Training Weekend
Twenty-five Year 10 students, working towards their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award, spent a recent weekend practicing their expedition skills.
Beginning in the school grounds the girls worked in teams, completing a carousel of skills activities including tent erection, compass work, route planning, map skills and Trangia use (methylated spirits cooking stove.) After completing the activities the girls had to cook their own supper, and sleep in the tent they had erected.
There were four teams in all: The Urban Weeds; the Unnamed; the Sherbet Lemons and Rhubarb and Custard. Points were awarded for each training activity and at the end of the afternoon each group had to give a presentation on survival skills and problem solving. On the Sunday morning the girls took the bus to Tetbury and used their newly acquired skills to navigate cross country back to school.
Miss Cutts and Mrs. Allen were impressed with the way the girls organised themselves, and declared The Sherbet Lemons, to be the winning team, closely followed by Rhubarb and Custard.
